The Society likes to make fun of Monty for his double name, so he can’t wait to trick them with the misnomer. The snake’s title is a practical joke that Monty plans to use on the Herpetologist Society upon revealing his discovery. They meet his newest discovery, which is named The Incredibly Deadly Viper. Uncle Monty shows the children the Reptile Room, a large hall where Monty keeps his living reptile collection.
The previous assistant, Monty tells the children, suddenly and suspiciously resigned. They will leave as soon as Monty’s new assistant arrives, a man named Stephano. Monty treats them well, and tells them they are going on a scientific expedition to Peru. He tells them they can have free reign of the house and can each have their own room. He invites them in, feeds them coconut cream cake (and a carrot for Sunny), and seems to be a much better guardian that Count Olaf. Montgomery, whom the children have never met, is the Baudelaire’s “late father’s cousin’s wife’s brother.” They are nervous at first, but Uncle Monty, as he prefers to be called, is a short, chubby, cheerful man with a round face. He lives on a street called Lousy Lane, in a house that smells like horseradish. Poe, the incompetent social worker who has been responsible for the children's well-being, takes them to their new guardian, a Dr. At the end of the first book, the three had been taken away from their horrible, selfish guardian, Count Olaf, who had tried to steal their fortune. Violet is the eldest sister, Klaus is the middle child and only boy, and Sunny is a toothy toddler. In an early review, Publishers Weekly noted that Snicket “uses formal, Latinate language and intrusive commentary to hilarious effect,” and complimented Helquist’s “exquisitely detailed drawings of Gothic gargoyles and mischievous eyes.” The Reptile Room reunites the reader with the three main characters, the Baudelaire children. The more recent adaptation was a 2017 television series that featured the first four books in the series and was released through Netflix. This movie was in turn adapted into a video game. The first adaptation was a feature film that was released in 2004, which featured the first three books in the series, including The Reptile Room. The Reptile Room was first published on September 30th 1999, by HarperCollins Publishing House. It was illustrated by Brett Helquist, and many of these illustrations contain hints and foreshadowing about the next book in the series or the larger plot.
The Reptile Room is the second book in “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” which was written by Daniel Handler under the pen name Lemony Snicket.
